Have you ever seen the show "What not to wear?" I have to say every time they threw all of the people's clothes away it made me cringe. There are just some pieces of clothing that we want to always have with us! Don't worry- we're not going to throw out any of your clothes, actually we'll probably find something that you already have that will work (unless of course that new top you've been eyeing is finally available- then go for it!) But the old college shirt that you've worn 1-2 times a week the last 10 years probably isn't going to make it in a final piece of wall art!
So how do we go about clothing choices- it's pretty simple and the answer will probably surprise you! Take a look around your living room- are there any colors that stand out? For our house, it's navy, white, grey and tan. So that's where I would start with our clothing options. I'm always a fan of navy and blue jeans- there's something very clean about it and everyone tends to look good in it! For our little one, Emma, it may be a navy dress with a denim jacket. For Dad, a navy polo with jeans and boots; for Micah a button down navy shirt with jeans and hey dudes, and for Abby and I, navy dresses or a navy blouse with jeggings or for Abby, white jeans or dark washed jeans. Here's a few options from Old Navy that I thought could give you a good idea of what I'm talking about (click on the images for access to the pieces at oldnavy.com) :
Dressing 5 people or 25 people it all comes down to one thing though: continuity! To keep everyone matching (without being matchy matchy), I usually suggest finding the clothing item you love best and working off of that. Sometimes it's mom's blouse or dad's checkered shirt or sometimes a pillow/curtain from the room that you'll be hanging your wall art in. For example:
Now that we have the item that we are working off of, it's time to dress everyone! I usually suggest that you pick 2-3 colors that you like from the inspiration piece and then everyone wears one at least one of them. However, I don't mean that each family has to wear the same color- i.e. Joe's family in green, Bill's family in navy, etc. (You can do that if you want, but I find a combination of colors actually ends up looking better than blocks of color through out the image), but it really just comes down to what you like best! Here are some examples!
